Chelsea Local
Photo Note: From the moment I saw the sign, I was so intrigued to shoot the market. There was so much motion, so much activity and noise, I almost felt as if I was shooting stills from a movie. My goal was to capture the life of the market both animate and inanimate (the pointing finger sign juxtaposed with the clock has a lot of energy and created drama as it emerges from the shadows). The people walking in this underground market seem to appear and disappear. Even though Chelsea Local is obviously an enclosed space, the floor has a “wet” feeling to it almost as if it had just rained.
New York is composed of so many little neighborhoods, each with their own flavor and personality. Chelsea Local is on the lower level of the Chelsea Market and is virtually a foodies paradise. The area was the meat packing district for Manhattan and retains that “food-like” quality and energy.
